Internship Requirements By Major

Nursing students fulfill the College’s internship requirement through their Clinical experiences.

If both majors require internships (e.g., CCJ + Sociology):

You usually need two internships, unless both department chairs agree that one internship meets the learning goals for both majors. If both departments agree, you will only receive academic credit for one internship course.

In instances where one major’s internship is the capstone requirement (e.g. Psychology), the student must complete the internship for that major and it is at the discretion of the department chair of the second major whether they will accept that internship as meeting the second major’s internship learning objectives.

In instances where both majors’ internships are the capstone (e.g. psych and neuroscience or art therapy), the student must enroll in the accelerated version of each internship course and complete distinct internships, with different course numbers, likely in different semesters, and complete the total number of hours for each internship.

If the learning objectives are not met, students should expect to complete two separate internship experiences, likely in different semesters, meeting the internship hours for each course individually (not double counting hours) and earning a total of 8 credits.  Hours from one internship/course cannot be applied/credited toward another internship course.

Double majors that may require a two-semester internship for one or both majors will need to complete the accelerated courses earning no more than a total of 8 credits of internship.

If only one major requires an internship (e.g., Sociology + Theology):

You only need to complete the internship required by the major that has the internship requirement

If neither major requires an internship (e.g., Theology + Philosophy):

You still complete one internship for the college requirement. You can choose the internship course in the academic department of either major (if offered), or INT1010.

Many internship courses are offered during the summer term. Please use the button below to review the internship courses available in the summer. Hours completed over the summer cannot be counted toward a fall semester internship.

Q: Can I begin my internship prior to my course starting/the start of the semester?
A: It is recommended that you wait until the semester begins to begin your internship hours. If you begin prior to the start of the semester, those hours will not count toward the total number of hours required by your course.

IMPORTANT NOTE: F-1 students may not start before the start of their approved employment authorization (minimum first day of the semester for CPT or first day of USCIS authorization on Employment Authorization Document (EAD) for pre-completion OPT).

Q: I am a double major, can I use the same internship site for two internship courses?
A: If both Academic Departments approve, you may complete your internship at the same site for two consecutive semesters, provided that you can fulfill the required hours for each course separately and do not count the same internship hours toward both courses.

For example, if you complete 120 internship hours while enrolled in POLSC4194 during the Fall semester, you may enroll in SOC4194 in the Spring semester and continue at the same internship site to complete an additional 120 hours for SOC4194.

You may not enroll in 2 internship courses during the same semester and count hours towards both courses.

The exception to this policy is if one or both of the internships serves as the capstone requirement for the major. In instances where one major’s internship is the capstone requirement (e.g. Psychology), the student must complete the internship for that major and it is at the discretion of the department chair of the second major whether they will accept that internship as meeting the second major’s internship learning objectives.

In instances where both majors’ internships are the capstone (e.g. psych and neuroscience or art therapy), the student must enroll in the accelerated version of each internship course and complete distinct internships, with different course numbers, likely in different semesters, and complete the total number of hours for each internship. In instances where the capstone requirement is 250 hours, the student will complete a total of 500 hours.

Q: I have a unique personal situation, can I have the interneship course waived?
A: The internship requirement is a graduation requirement for all students. Most students fulfill the internship requirement via their major credited internship course. Students who do not have an internship requirement within their major must complete an internship to meet the College’s graduation requirement. 

Q: What happens if I can’t find an internship?
A: If you are unable to secure an internship by the academic add deadline, you must drop the internship course and re-enroll during a subsequent semester.

Q: What happens if I can’t complete the required number of internship hours due to issue with my internship site?
A: In instances where a student is unable to complete a fall or spring semester internship within the semester dates and has completed all of the coursework with only hours remaining, the student should speak with the instructor and department chair about a temporary INC or IP (In Progress) grade to finish the hours and complete the necessary paperwork and obtain necessary approvals.  This is awarded in rare circumstances at the discretion of the department chair.
