Emmanuel College recognizes internships and experiential learning as high-impact practices that are essential to student success. All students participate in at least one experiential learning opportunity before graduation.
Consistent with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), Emmanuel College defines an internship as a form of experiential learning that combines classroom knowledge with practical experience in a professional setting. Internships allow students to develop skills, gain relevant experience, and explore career paths, while providing employers with the opportunity to mentor and evaluate emerging talent.
To be considered an internship, an experience should:
- Extend classroom learning by allowing students to apply academic knowledge in a professional setting, rather than primarily advancing the employer’s operations or replacing the work of a regular employee.
- Provide skills and knowledge that are transferable to future employment settings.
- Include a defined start and end date, along with a clear position description and desired qualifications.
- Establish specific learning objectives that align with the student’s academic and career goals.
- Provide supervision by a qualified professional with expertise in the field.
- Include regular feedback and mentoring from the supervisor.
- Offer appropriate resources, equipment, and facilities to support student learning and achievement of learning objectives.
Emmanuel students may pursue internships for academic credit or as a non-credit experience.
Credit-bearing internships are typically completed during a student’s junior or senior year and generally require 12–20 hours per week over a semester. Students enroll in an internship course where they work with faculty to secure approval, establish learning objectives, and participate in academic coursework associated with the experience.
Students seeking a non-credit internship experience may enroll in a 0-credit, pass/fail internship course, which provides a transcript notation upon successful completion. All internships must include meaningful learning opportunities and supervision by a professional at the internship site.
Internships may be paid or unpaid, though the Career Center strongly encourages employers to offer compensation.
Academic credit does not replace wages; interns classified as employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act must be paid at least minimum wage. Paid internships also tend to attract a more competitive applicant pool.
Unpaid internships are subject to strict U.S. Department of Labor guidelines and must meet specific legal criteria to ensure compliance.
A quality internship:
- provides a clear job description that includes organizational context, duties or project work, required qualifications, learning outcomes, work hours, duration, and application instructions.
- Students should engage in meaningful, challenging assignments that apply academic knowledge and build professional skills, supported by appropriate training, supervision, and feedback.
- Employers should also provide a suitable workspace and resources, ensure a safe and accessible work location (not in a private residence), and complete a final evaluation and performance review with the student.
Approval for remote internships is determined by the academic department.
If approved, students and supervisors should clearly define weekly hours, establish communication expectations, and schedule regular check-ins (e.g., via video or phone).
Additional departmental guidelines or requirements may also apply.
