About Julie’s
Julie’s is a welcoming, inclusive space providing free educational and supportive services to develop strong, successful families and adults.
Julie’s operates three programs:
1) Family Development offers learning opportunities to underserved parents through an intensive curriculum of academic and life management skills. 2) Adult Basic Education (ABE) serves anyone age 16+ who is interested in academic classes in preparation for a high school credential. This is a flexible, part-time program with a hybrid option. 3) Children’s Services offers licensed early childhood education (for infants to age 6) for the children of our adult learners. All adult learners have access to digital literacy classes, individual tutoring, career/next step services, and many supportive services. Julie’s staff and students collaborate to develop individualized plans to overcome barriers to achieving their hopes and dreams.
Adult Education Intern
Adult Education Interns at Julie’s work in either the Family Development Program, the ABE Program or both. Tasks vary depending on the skills and interests of the intern but typically include:
• Tutoring adult learners on their basic reading and writing, tech and/or math skills either one-on-one or in small groups. Classroom teachers and staff support interns in developing materials and activities for tutoring.
• Working with classroom teachers by supporting adult learners in the classroom and helping develop lessons and curriculum materials
• An opportunity to teach some classes and/or units in one of our core academic subjects (math, science, ELA, career and social studies) and/or in another area of expertise relevant to adult learners (budgeting, yoga, understanding public schools, etc.).
• Staffing computer lab time when students are working on individual goals and co-teaching basic tech classes.
• Working as part of the team by attending staff meetings, occasionally subbing for absent teachers, taking part in program celebrations and assisting staff with general program support.
No teaching experience or academic expertise is necessary but an enthusiasm for connecting with adult learners and the ability to motivate and engage students is essential. Adult learners attend classes Monday-Thursday 9:30AM-2PM or 6-8PM. Intern schedule and total hours per week are flexible within those times and will be set individually.
