The Industry Recruitment Series is a boutique event meant to provide you with the opportunity to network with professionals in a relaxed manner, learn about potential opportunities, and gain insight into opportunities in your field.
Please find the STUDENT PREPARATION or CAREER CENTER tables to leave your coats, bags, or take a moment to prep before speaking with employers.
Once the event begins, a staff member from the Career Center team will provide event instructions. You may then go to any employer table you’d like and begin conversations.
Every 15 minutes you will hear an announcement to make your way to the next table, these are round table/group conversations in a speed networking format.
You will have the chance to learn about each company, opportunities they have and ask any questions.
The recruiters may also want to know about you, so be prepared to answer their questions. (See tips below)
- Update and print copies of your resume
- Research the companies & opportunities (you may find these on our Event Calendar or in the emails we sent)
- Plan and practice a brief elevator pitch (see below) or introduction to use when meeting employers
- Dress to impress!
- Write down any questions you want to ask employers
Sample: “Hi, I’m [Name]. I am a [class year] studying [area of study] seeking an internship opportunity that will allow me to apply my knowledge and contribute to a dynamic team.”
- Plan your route and prioritize the employers you want to visit first
- Make sure to collect business cards or contact information from the employers you speak with
- Introduce yourself, ask meaningful questions and show enthusiasm
- Take notes and key points for your own knowledge and to use in the follow up email
- Send any follow-up thank-you emails within 24 hours
- Send a LinkedIn message (personalize your message to let them know you met at the event)
- Send a LinkedIn request to connect to build your network and stay up to date on more opportunities
- Can you tell me about any internship programs you have?
- What skills and experiences do you look for in potential candidates?
- What does the application and interview process look like?
- What is the team dynamic or company culture like?
- Are their mentorship or training programs available?
We hope this guide helps you navigate the event strategically and make the most of your interactions with employers!
You can always find a Career Advisor or Career Center team member at our events to help with any prep you need or questions you may have.
