Guided Reflection On Work
Emmanuel GROW (Guided Reflection on Work) uses brief conversations between student employees and their on-campus supervisors to help students connect their classroom learning with their work experiences. GROW helps students recognize and reflect on the learning and skill development that occur through their on-campus employment experiences.
Take your growth even further with Emmanuel GROW (Guided Reflection on Work), a program based on a nationally recognized Iowa GROW model that helps you turn everyday on-campus work into meaningful learning.
Through brief, structured conversations with your supervisor, you’ll:
- Connect your job to your academic and career goals
- Recognize the skills you’re building in real time
- Clearly articulate your experience for your resume and future interviews
GROW makes your learning visible – so you can confidently share the value of your on-campus employment.
Once each semester, you’ll have a guided conversation with your supervisor to help you connect your work experiences to your academic and career development. The conversation centers on four reflection questions:
• How is this job fitting in with your academics?
• What are you learning here that is helping you in school?
• What are you learning in class that you can apply to your work?
• What skills or experiences from this job do you think you will use in your future profession?
On-going assessment conducted by the Office of Institutional Research found that students who participated in GROW reported higher levels of growth across all assessed skills and experiences compared to non-participants.
Below is a highlight from the Spring 2026 assessment:

“The reflection with my supervisor helped me make the connection on how my job has benefited me as a student and the skills it has taught me that I will carry with me into my future.”
