Resume Template: Creative Resume

Resume Template for Creative Fields

Creative resumes are best suited for students pursuing fields where visual design and personal branding are part of the work such as: Graphic Design, Marketing, Advertising, Digital Media, Arts or other creative industries.

Your resume is a reflection of your skills and personal brand. For creative positions, your design choices should help demonstrate what you can do, your resume should market you.

This resume template makes sure you have a format that is readable, professional, and meets the expectations of any hiring manager.

This template also specifically highlights creative experiences and design skills unique to you, separately from additional work history, so that the most relevant experiences are showcased first.

Small design choices can make your resume memorable without distracting from your qualifications. Your resume should still feel like a professional document, just one that represents you.

You can create your resume using tools like Word, Google Docs, Canva, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, or other design programs but avoid relying on pre-made templates.

  • Heading stands out and contains important contact information, you may include any relevant links in the contact information section of your resume or throughout your resume such as: A website or portfolio, LinkedIn profile, Design portfolio, or a professional social media account.
  • Font is sans serif, which is simple, clean, and readable
  • Layout reads easily from left to right across the entire page
  • Dates are all right-aligned and consistently formatted
  • Creative elements such as a simple logo using your initials or symbols that reflect your interests or career, and a color pallet with 1-2 colors that are easy to read
  • Skills listed at the top of your resume so employers immediately see your creative/design abilities: Digital and software tools, adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), Canva, and Coding or programming languages
  • Projects can be personal creations, freelance work, class or independent projects. When describing projects, highlight your role, the tools or skills used, the purpose of the project, your process and the outcome.

If you create a creative resume, have a formal resume version available. Some employers, industries, and application systems require a traditional format.

Keep your design simple and avoid overly distracting colors or designs.

While pre-built templates can be helpful for inspiration, employers often see similar designs, and sometimes they can cause errors in the Application Tracking System (ATS).

Use your own skills and creativity to develop a layout, color palette, or visual elements that represent your personal brand.

Creative fields value samples of work. Consider creating a Professional Portfolio if you have not already done so to make your work easy to view and access.

Your cover letter should stay formal or incorporate the same design elements from your resume. Please see the Cover Letters Resource for more information.
