This role is a hybrid role and is unpaid. However, this role is eligible for academic and course credit. 

Seeking interns that can intern a minimum of 8 hours a week.

Program/Department Overview:

Refugee Services has provided direct employment services to local refugee populations for over 40 years. These services are offered to refugees, political asylees, Cuban and Haitian entrants, certified victims of human trafficking, and other work-authorized immigrants. Services include job search assistance, resume and interview preparation, cultural orientation, pre-employment vocational English language classes, and job placement and follow-up. Additionally, post-employment support services include identifying, mapping out, and working towards their career advancement goals; including education and skills training.

Internship Responsibilities:

Assist work-authorized immigrants and refugees with finding gainful employment, work closely with team of Career Coaches to support case management, job preparation and tasks toward this goal, including:

  • Work with clients, one-on-one, interview practice, job application completion, resume development, job search techniques, and basic computer training.
  • Teach participants how to use public transportation, how to get to work, and locate other necessary resources.
  • Assist students in ESOL classes as needed, including weekly workshop trainings
  • Conduct job searches tailored to clients’ needs.
  • Research training and education programs appropriate for a client’s career path.
  • If scheduling aligns, assist with workshops related to client career advancement.
  • Other duties and short-term projects developed to meet team needs and intern interests/skills. May include fliers and promotional materials, writing, and supporting topics/content planning for ESOL conversation groups.

Orientation and training will be provided; including training materials and resources. 

Skills/Qualifications: 

  • Commitment to learning techniques for providing effective services to support job outcomes to immigrants.
  • Flexibility—responsibilities will vary on a day-to-day basis.
  • Empathy for the challenges faced by participants in learning a new culture and a new language.
  • Ability to work as part of a team with staff and other volunteers/interns.
  • Bilingual or additional language proficiency is a plus, but not mandatory; especially in languages spoken by refugee and immigrant clients (i.e. Spanish, Haitian Creole, Arabic, French, Amharic, Dari, Pashto)
