We are looking for a highly motivated, hard-working undergraduate interested in science and medicine to become part of our neuroscience research team at Harvard Medical School studying the peripheral nervous system. In particular, the project will focus on how sensory neurons convert mechanical pressures into neural signals by uncovering the mechanotransduction channels that fine-tune touch, thereby revealing new insights into pain and sensory disorders. This job will provide an opportunity to understand how a science lab operates and will also give you excellent experience in neuroscience research. Undergraduates from our lab are successful applicants to medical school and graduate school, and are occasionally authors on scientific publications.
In this position, the candidate will learn and perform laboratory techniques such as histology and immunostaining, microscopy, rodent surgery, behavioral analyses, and accurate data recording/lab notebook maintenance. As the candidate demonstrates proficiency and efficiency in the lab, opportunities to work more independently will be available and encouraged.
IMPORTANT: This position involves a lot of time working with mice. Please take into consideration any allergies or aversions to working with mice prior to applying.
TIME COMMITMENT: You need to be available to work at least 6-9 hours per week during the school year. Hours and days are flexible. The expectation is that you are willing to keep this job for at least 1 year (preferably working over the summer), with the opportunity to stay longer if things are going well.
