The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Tax Preparer is a trained volunteer certified by the IRS to provide free, accurate, and confidential tax preparation and filing services. This position is ideal for individuals seeking to make a meaningful impact in their community while gaining valuable tax preparation and customer service experience.
Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate federal and state tax returns for qualifying taxpayers, including low-to-moderate-income individuals, people with disabilities, and limited-English-speaking households.
- Conduct client interviews to collect necessary financial information and documents.
- Review financial records (W-2s, 1099s, Social Security cards, etc.) for accuracy.
- Identify and apply eligible credits and deductions, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
- Explain tax results clearly to clients and provide copies of completed returns.
- Protect client confidentiality and adhere to IRS Volunteer Standards of Conduct (VSC).
- Participate in quality review processes before filing returns.
- Refer taxpayers with complex returns to IRS resources or paid professionals.
