Basketball Coach

Position Summary
The goal of 3Point’s basketball program is to use basketball skill-building to foster a lifelong commitment to health and fitness, while teaching the values and life lessons that support success in school and in the community. In this role, the coach creates a fun, inclusive learning environment where students develop their basketball abilities and grow through core values such as respect, inclusion and belonging, joy, collaboration, and accountability.
General Objectives of this Role
3Point’s Basketball Program serves students in grades 4–8 and focuses on both athletic development and character-building. Coaches are expected to emphasize the life lessons inherent in the sport while teaching basketball fundamentals. To support ongoing growth, coaches are also expected to participate in professional development opportunities offered by the organization.
Responsibilities
1. Teach basketball fundamentals (dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, footwork) using developmentally appropriate methods for grades 4–8 by adapting coaching to meet a range of skill levels and learning styles
2. Create structured, engaging drills and activities that build skills while keeping students motivated and active
3. Incorporate life lessons through sports, reinforcing teamwork, discipline, leadership, and resilience that promotes sportsmanship, fair play, and positive peer interactions
4. Provide positive, strengths-based feedback and celebrate student growth
5. Address behavior challenges using restorative and supportive approaches
Work Environment
Coaches split their time between classroom spaces and the gym, supporting both academic enrichment and basketball instruction. The role requires between 4–15 program hours per week, along with approximately 2.5 hours of planning and preparation time, with opportunities for additional hours during summer programming or occasional weekend basketball events. Typical program hours fall between 1:00–6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with limited weekend sessions as needed. Basketball Coaches may work two to four 12-week sessions during the school year (September through June) and/or participate in a five-week summer program.
Operations, Equipment & Safety
● Ensure student safety at all times by monitoring behavior, space, and equipment
● Manage and maintain basketball equipment at assigned sites
● Monitor supply inventory and communicate when replenishment is needed
● Assist with setup and breakdown of materials and equipment
Qualifications
● Proven experience coaching youth and teaching basketball fundamentals effectively
● Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to motivate and support students
● Ability to create inclusive, safe, and positive learning environments rooted in core values
● Reliable, professional, and able to collaborate effectively with staff, school partners, and volunteers
● Strong classroom and group management skills, with the ability to problem-solve and adapt as needed
● Experience working in diverse communities and integrating into existing school environments
● Be at least 18 years of age.
● U.S. Citizenship or permanent resident status.
● Possess a high school diploma or GED.
● Expectations of inclusion, enthusiasm, patience and good organizational skills.
● Criminal history background and National Sex Offender Public Registry Website (NSOPW) checks are conducted on all 3Point staff members when an offer is made. Your employment is always contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check.
Preferred: Connection to the Boston community or Boston Public Schools
Compensation ● $20-$30 an hour, 5 sick days a year, paid Holidays if regularly scheduled to work.
